TOWN chief executive Nick Watkins has provided an update on the latest situation with the County Ground redevelopment, stating that club are waiting on a response from the local council regarding their proposal.
The redevelopment process has been a slow one since plans were first announced back in 2010 and it was confirmed in the summer that relegation had put a temporary stop on things.
However, the club have still been in regular dialogue with Swindon Borough Council and in the club’s last update back in December, it was confirmed that they had submitted a proposal of what revenue-making streams they plan to incorporate into the redevelopment.
Now Watkins is waiting on the council’s response before the next stage of redevelopment can begin, which will undoubtedly be boosted by Swindon’s expected return to League One for next season.
“The County Ground redevelopment discussions are very much ongoing, we have had an exchange of documents with the council and we are just waiting for the council’s response on what we have submitted,” said Watkins.
“Hopefully they will get back to us when they have had a good chance to review it and we will take things from there.”
Relegation did play a big part in the delayed implementation of the redevelopment plans, with the club wanting to wait and asses just how the drop in division would affect revenue.
Watkins, though, has been pleasantly surprised there was little change in that aspect, and is hopeful the club can push on financially when back in League One.
“It was perhaps my own paucity of time that made things stall a little bit,” he added.
“You do reel a little bit after relegation and worry about how revenues will hold up, but the revenues and everything else regarding the club have held up remarkably well while we have been in League Two.
“Now we just hope we can emulate that at least and hopefully better it in League One.”
