ALAN McCormack has challenged Town to become the one and only member of the League Two ‘100 Club’.
Not a single team has reached the 100-point mark in the fourth tier of English football in its current incarnation, with the closest being MK Dons, who clocked up 97 points in the 2007/08 season.
With their current total being 73 points, Town would climb to 106 points if they win all 11 of their remaining games, and defender McCormack believes that is a realistic and healthy aim.
“Our standard should be, ‘let’s win 11 of them’,” he said.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen a League Two team get over 100 points, and with 11 games left we can get to the 100 mark.
“We know we’re good enough to finish in the top three, but we want to prove we’re the best team in this league.
“A lot of people have come out and said, ‘they are the best team’, it’s been well-publicised, and if we keep doing the right things and keep having that desire to stay on top of the league, then we should win a lot more games than we lose.
“We shouldn’t even lose again and if we do that, then we win the league and that’s what we want.
“That will not only give us a title, it will set us up for next year, and with a couple more additions and extra quality we can certainly go places next year. That’s got to be our main objective.”
Town will begin their quest to hit the 100-point mark this weekend, when they travel to resurgent Crewe, who are unbeaten in six League Two matches.
McCormack believes the Robins will be boosted by the fact that they have had no midweek game this week, which has not often been the case of late.
“It’s been difficult with Saturday-Tuesdays for quite a number of weeks,” said the Irishman.
“I think it has taken over us, but this week we’ve got no excuse after having a couple of days off and time to prepare for the game.
“Saturday is going to be a hell of a test, so we’ve got to go into it with a good bit of steel about us.
“When a team is winning and have momentum and have set themselves the target of the play-offs, they have got their own desire.
“But we’ve got ours, and ours is staying top of the league and continuing to get better. We want to win every single game.”
