TODAY marks the 43rd anniversary of Swindon's famous League Cup win over Arsenal, and interim chairman Jeremy Wray has called on fans still to snap up their Wembley tickets to grasp the chance of being part of another memorable day for the club.
Town have sold over 27,000 tickets for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash with Chesterfield, leaving around 3,000 of the initial allocation left to sell.
Almost 100,000 supporters packed out England’s national stadium to witness Swindon's shock 3-1 win in the 1969 League Cup final against the Gunners, who at the time played two divisions above the Robins.
The Johnstone’s Paint Trophy may not be quite as glamorous a competition but Wray does not want fans to miss out on the rare occasion of seeing their side claim a cup victory again at Wembley.
“This is our first appearance in the final of a cup competition for 43 years,” said Wray.
“It is a big chance to turn Wembley red and a chance for us to see Swindon lift a trophy. I would like all the fans still to buy a ticket to get theirs now and help cheer on the club on what will undoubtedly be a fantastic day.”
Robins legend Don Rogers, who was part of the Town side that stunned Arsenal over four decades ago, will be heading to the new Wembley with Wray, and he expects it to be a day to savour - whatever the outcome.
He said: “It is a Swindon day out, we can go and enjoy it and it will be magic. If we win, fantastic, if we lose, so what?
“Eitherway we will have had a fantastic day out at Wembley and then we can come back and win League Two.”
