GLENN Hoddle hailed the impact Paolo Di Canio has had at Swindon and called on everyone connected with the club to cherish the moment when they play at Wembley on Sunday.

The former England boss was at the County Ground on Tuesday night to be inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame.

Hoddle famously led Town to promotion to the Premier League back in 1993 when the Robins beat Leicester 4-3 in a thrilling Division One play-off final at the old Wembley.

On his return to Wiltshire, the 54-year-old was able to visualise the celebrations that followed on that day and he hopes Di Canio and his players will be able to experience something similar in the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Sunday.

“I actually recalled the scenes after we won at Wembley when I was coming back into Swindon on Tuesday,” said Hoddle.

“It took hours to get into the town and I actually reminisced about that coming down. It was a wonderful evening and a wonderful morning after as well as celebrations went on for a while.

He added: “It will be nice for the players to play at Wembley because it looks good and has an aura about it.

“I don’t think it will quite have the aura that the old one had. That really was special. I experienced winning there but I also experienced losing there and it is not a nice place to be when you have lost.

“However, when you have won, like we did when we were promoted there is no better place and you want to stay there for days.

“It is a fantastic achievement by Paolo and the lads, hopefully it won’t distract from their promotion push but it will be a wonderful day on Sunday and I wish them all the very best.”

Di Canio was delighted to hear such praise from a person he is full of respect for.

“I was happy to hear what he said. He was one of the best players ever and he also did many good things as a manager,” said the Town boss.

“It was nice of him to say what he did.”
