SUPERMARINE joint-manager Gary Horgan is targeting four more wins which he believes will secure Southern Premier survival, starting with tomorrow’s home clash with Chesham.

Victory over Banbury last weekend saw Marine move to within five points of safety with a game in hand, and Horgan is convinced survival remains is his side’s grasp.

“If we pick up four more wins then I think that would do us, three would give us a sniff I think,” he said, “Our target now is 47 points, and if we go that I think we would be safe, but 44 would mean it will be touch and go for us.

“We know we are capable of getting those wins, and it does not matter when they come.

“The spirit in the camp is good, and that is important at this stage of the season and it has seen us go on a good run recently.

“Teams around us are doing well too, and if you look at Redditch you would not have expected them to get anything against the likes of Chippenham or Totton, so it can be done and we need to do it too.”

Supermarine’s current points total of 35 would have been enough for them to have stayed up for the last two seasons, but Horgan is unsure of why the points requirement has increased this time around.

“I don’t know whether the league has got better or it has evened out because it has got worse,” he said.

“I suppose it might be because no one has run away with the league this season like in the past, although Brackley have threatened to do it.

“There is not a standout team up there like there has been in the past, like Truro and Salisbury who went up with much bigger budgets.

“Teams are taking points off each other for whatever reason, but we just have to try and get as many points as we can.”

Tomorrow’s opponents currently lie fifth and are challenging for a play-off place, but Horgan believes it does not really make a difference where the opposition are in the table at this stage of the season.

“Most teams you play now have something to fight for, be it a place in the play-offs or fighting to avoid relegation, so you go into the games looking to give 100 per cent whether your opponent is at the top or the bottom,” he said.

“We are probably better off playing teams who have nothing to play for in the middle of the table, but most of our remaining games are against sides in the top 10, so they will all be tough.“ Danny Allen is unavailable for the game at the Webb’s Wood Stadium, while Rob Dean is suspended, so both Sam Morris and Harry Etheridge return to the Marine squad.
