JOHN Fisher has concerns for the fitness levels of his players as Shrivenham’s Hellenic Premier season meanders to a close.

The Rec outfit have four more games to play and Fisher is worried his players will lose fitness as there are sizeable gaps between each match.

But he acknowledges that his team only have themselves to blame due to their failure to progress far in any of the multiple cup competitions.

“It’s all winding down now and the worst thing about it is we’ve got big gaps between all the games,” said Fisher.

“We’ve got Saturday-Tuesday, then Highworth on Easter Monday, and I’ve just been told that our last game of the season against Shortwood has been put back to a Thursday from a Tuesday.

“It’s a pain really. I know there’s nothing to play for but the fitness levels drop because we aren’t a professional club so we aren’t in every day training.

“That’s part and parcel of not doing well in the cups, if we had done better we’d still be playing more league games and cup games, but we were out of all the cups before Christmas.

“It’s our own fault but I’d rather be doing that than playing four times a week.”

Shrivenham host Wantage tomorrow, with both sides highly unlikely to suffer relegation despite being in the lower echelons of the table.

Fisher is content with the 14th place his team currently occupy as they have not been battling relegation for long periods as was the case in 2010/11, although he admits he wants further improvement.

“It’s 100 per cent better than it was last year, it couldn’t be any worse,” he said.

“But it’s still nowhere near where the club expects, you want to be fighting to win something really.

“I’m not the sort of manager that hopes to finish halfway up the league, that’s not much of a challenge.”

Elsewhere in the Premier Division tomorrow, lowly Fairford welcome Witney to Cinder Lane.
