WOOTTON Bassett boss Dave Turner has revealed he wants Malmesbury to be relegated from Division One West in a stinging attack on the Flying Monk outfit.
The Rylands Way chief presided over a 4-2 victory for his side over Vics at the weekend, but was hugely unhappy with the attitude of the opposition during and after the contest.
And although Turner admitted his full-back James Blake deserved to be sent off for a headbutt in the closing stages, he was far more concerned with Vics’ first-half display.
“I’ve got no time for Malmesbury after Saturday’s performance,” he said. “They went 2-0 up and after that they were more interested in trying to get players sent off - every single challenge they were asking the referee.
“They were gloating and their goalkeeper was doing step-overs - you don’t do that.
“I thought the way they conducted themselves was right out of order, and I don’t normally say things like that.
“I was so angry at half time, not so much at the performance but the way Malmesbury conducted themselves, and it made my team talk easy. I just pointed out they were taking the mickey out of us.
“I hope they go down, they deserve to go down with that attitude.”
In response, Malmesbury boss Simon Winstone defended his players, opening by denying they had attempted to get members of the opposition dismissed.
“I don’t think it was a dirty game and as for players trying to get other players sent off, I think that’s a load of rubbish to be honest,” he said.
“If he thinks the players were being disrespectful then that’s the way it is, I’m not going to say anything about it. At the end of the day they won the game, so what’s he (Turner) worried about?
“I’m not all that bothered about stuff like that, we’ve just got to concentrate on the football.”
The Bassett-Malmesbury fixture has a history of controversy this season as in the opening game of the campaign, Malmesbury shocked their opponents 3-0 in a game that saw Bassett’s Luke Sharps and Mitch Wyatt sent off.
And Winstone added: “Without sounding too disrespectful I think a lot of it was down to the first game.
“I know they were upset about that because they had two players sent off and were whingeing and moaning. But I think they took us lightly and they came unstuck.”
Malmesbury travel to Cricklade in the Supplementary Cup third round tomorrow while Bassett have no game. Highworth, New College and Ciren Dev are also without a fixture but Purton journey to Easington in Division One West.
