GOALKEEPER Wes Foderingham is confident that Swindon’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final disappointment will not throw them off track in the league.
Town were sunk 2-0 by Chesterfield at Wembley and now have nine games left of their League Two programme in which to secure automatic promotion.
Paolo Di Canio’s side have suffered defeats to Oxford United and Crewe in the league in March, but Foderingham believes the bitter blow of defeat to Chesterfield will not blow the Robins’ title tilt off course.
“It was a one-off game and we lost, but throughout the season we’ve shown a lot of consistency and played good football,” he said.
“There’s no doubt in my mind that we’re looking to do that through to the end of the season.
“We’ve said all season that the league is our number one priority and that it was a bonus to get to the final.
“It was a great experience for us but it wasn’t meant to be, and we’ve got to look forward and hopefully win the league now.
“We would take that above winning the JPT, so we’ve got to put all our efforts into doing that.”
Although Foderingham’s focus is now firmly on helping Swindon gain promotion, he admitted that there were aspects of the Wembley performance that he and his teammates were left to regret.
Specifically, the stopper felt that a goal in the first half could have swung the result in Town’s favour.
“I’m gutted,” he said. “The first-half performance was really good, we just needed a goal and if we had done that it could have been a different outcome.
“Second half we were poor and we know that. We were nowhere near as good as we were in the first half.
“Football is full of ifs and we didn’t get a goal, and we should have played better in the second half, but we didn’t and credit to them because they scored and then got another at the end.
“We know we could have done a lot better, unfortunately it just wasn’t our day.”
