MALMESBURY boss Simon Winstone says he is unlikely to make another cameo appearance in a Vics shirt tomorrow, but fancies another run-out before the season is out.
The former Stoke reserves man, now 37, brought himself on up front late against Cricklade in the Supplementary Cup last-16 tie on Saturday, and smashed in the goal that took the game to 2-2 before Malmesbury won 4-2 on penalties.
Winstone only named himself on the bench as cover for injuries and does not expect to play against visitors Brimscombe & Thrupp in Division One West tomorrow.
“I think we’ll be alright this weekend,” he said.
“It’s taken me a while to recover and it’s just stopped aching, but I might have another run-out before the season ends.”
Vics are second-bottom of Division One West and will continue their fight for their Hellenic League status against midtable Brimscombe.
Winstone added: “We’ve won quite a few cup games this season, and if those were in the league we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are.
“We need those points and we’ll do our best to get them, if we can put together a few league wins it would be handy.”
Elsewhere this weekend, New College welcome lowly Carterton and first-team coach Rob Hopkins is hoping his team continue their recent good form.
College are unbeaten in seven league outings and Hopkins said: “The lads seem to have turned a corner in terms of results, we’re still unbeaten in the league this year and they have got to grips with the physical requirement.
“We have done that well in league games recently but we probably needed a bit of a rest (last weekend), we looked a bit leggy in the last game.”
Richie Smith is unavailable for College while Ben Wells is banned.
Elsewhere, it’s derby day for Cricklade and Wootton Bassett at Stones Lane, the former side having recruited Elliott Wheatley from New College recently.
Five Bassett players including striker Mitch Wyatt were today due to return from the stag do of former Rylands Way front man Sam Collier.
Bassett boss Dave Turner admitted: “I’m not sure what state they’ll be in. Hopefully with a good night’s sleep they’ll be ready to go.”
Ciren Dev host Winterbourne at the Corinium while Shrivenham and Purton have no game.
