IF Saturday’s game confirmed anything, it is that bringing in a proven goalscorer this summer should be considered paramount.
For a good hour of the game against Bristol Rovers, Town were at their dominant best as they carved the visitors open on a regular basis, only to be found wanting in the final third.
Bar Paul Benson, Town have not had a striker this season that leads the line and puts fear into the opposition.
Alan Connell, Ronan Murray, Billy Bodin and Raffa De Vita are all good second strikers but Saturday’s result perhaps showed how much less of an attacking threat Town are if a clinical finisher like Benson is injured.
The club certainly cannot be accused of not having tried to rectify this. In pre-season they made unsuccessful attempts to sign Cody McDonald and Clayton Donaldson while they had thought they had got their man in Leon Clarke, only for the striker’s infamous tunnel bust up ending his brief Town career.
Again, Di Canio tried to bring in a proven scorer in January but such players were either unavailable of unwilling to drop to League Two.
In the end, Town took a chance on Jonathan Tehoue, a player who certainly had the physical presence Di Canio was looking for but his goal scoring record left something to be desired.
Whether he could have been the answer we will probably never know, with Di Canio admitting he is unlikely to play for Town again this season following an incident on the training pitch last week.
For now, Town have enough quality in their team to get them over the finish line but it will be pivotal next season for Town to have a player capable of creating something from nothing, not least because it then gives the opposition something to think about.
As this season has progressed, many sides have become wise to the threat Town possess in Matt Ritchie and the winger has often been double marked in games. Take him out of the side and Town's attacking threat is undoubtedly weakened.
Having another player on the pitch who is capable of scoring a goal every other game would ensure Town always having someone available who can provide a spark and grab a winner out of nothing, which is something that Saturday's game was crying out for.
