SWINDON secured another three vital points in their quest for promotion as Paul Benson’s second-half strike sealed a 1-0 win at Morecambe today.
After a scrappy first half, Benson struck soon after the restart and Town then defended well to seal a second successive win on the road.
Here are the key moments from today’s game
5 mins: Morecambe come very close to taking the lead as Lewis Alessandra runs through on goal but Jay McEveley superbly recovered to poke the ball out for a corner.
24 mins: After that early chance there was very little action during a scrappy period of play before Craig Curran volleyed harmlessly wide for the home side.
36 mins:Town continued to struggle to create anything in the final third as a Jay McEveley free kick into the area came to nothing, with the Morecambe defence able to clear.
39 mins: Luke Rooney’s passing has been poor and it is hardly surprising when Paolo Di Canio opts to bring him off just before the break, bringing on Lee Holmes in his place.
40 mins: Simon Ferry receives the ball just outside the area as Morecambe fail to properly clear a Holmes ball into the box, but the Scot shoots over the bar.
46 mins (GOAL, Benson 0-1): Straight after the restart Town take the lead when Lee Holmes sent Joe Devera’s ball into the box across the face of goal and the lethal Benson was on hand to stab home.
56 mins: Substitute Ronan Murray shoots wide as Town push for a second, with the opener having filled them with confidence.
71 mins:Foderingham does enough to prevent Carlton getting a shot off after he had gone through on goa
90 mins: Morecambe are still to register a shot on target and they are not getting any closer as a promising attack ultimately ends in disappointment as substitute Jordan Burrow volley’s wide.
90+1 mins:Nick Fenton sees a deflected header hit the woodwork before Benson scuffs a shot just wide from Simon Ferry’s square ball.
