PAUL Benson wants to cap a highly productive 10 days with a win over Northampton that would move Swindon to within touching distance of promotion.
The Robins have claimed an impressive haul of seven points from a possible nine following a home draw with Bristol Rovers and wins at Barnet and Morecambe.
Swindon’s real strength this season has been in their home form and they have dropped points just once at the County Ground since the turn of the year.
And while Benson is now feeling the effects of playing so many games in such a short space of time, he is ready to give his all today and do what is needed to help Town record another vital victory.
“People say that we as footballers are privileged to be do what we are doing but it is tough, mentally and physically,” he added.
“You have to be well-prepared for these sorts of period and I think we have proved that by picking up seven points from the last three games.
“If we can get a win, that would be 10 points and that would be a tremendous haul for four games in quick succession.
“A win will take us to 86 and in my eyes that means we are nearly there.”
Paolo Di Canio is just as keen to see his side put in a good performance today as he is to see them claim three points, with the Town boss having been unhappy with the shift put in by a number of his players at Morecambe on Friday.
Benson accepts Town were far from at their best but believes a real test of a side’s promotion credentials is if they can still collect maximum points even when below par.
“We were not great on Friday but we put in a promotion-winning performance,” he added.
“We were not at our best but we took three points away from home and there are lots of times when you go away and play quite well but get nothing.
“It just shows how good we are as a unit that we can go to places like Morecambe, not play well and still come away with three points.”
