SUPERMARINE jumped out of the relegation places in the Southern Premier after defeating local rivals Chippenham 2-0 at Hardenhuish Park yesterday.

An early header from Bradley Gray and a late penalty from Nick Stanley gave the visitors all three points.

That result, coupled with Banbury’s 2-0 defeat at leaders Brackley, enabled Marine to move fifth-from-bottom with three games to play.

However, joint boss Gary Horgan has warned that the job is nowhere near done and that the squad need to maintain their focus.

“It’s a massive win and a massive weekend for us,” said Horgan, whose side also beat Stourbridge 2-1 on Saturday.

"But it’s only massive if we stay up this year. This Saturday and Monday will count for nothing if we lose the next three and don’t pick up any points.

“I think it always has been in our hands but I guess it is officially now (as Marine are out of the relegation zone) - it’s down to us to stay up.

“It’s nice to look at the table and see the result of your hard work, but it counts for nothing if the squad think we’ve cracked it because we haven’t by any means.

“We’ve still got to play two of the top five teams. It’s an old cliche but we’ll take each game as it comes, as we always have done.”

Marine took the lead after just seven minutes at Hardenhuish Park, as Ben Wells’ near-post corner was nodded into the net by Gray.

That was the way it stayed until five minutes from time, when Ash Edenborough was felled in the area and Nick Stanley smashed the spot kick down the centre to seal the win.

Meanwhile, relegated Cirencester did Supermarine a huge favour by winning 3-2 at fellow strugglers Evesham.

Scott Griffin put the visitors ahead just before the half hour and on 37 minutes the lead was doubled when Aidan Bennett converted after Jamie Dunn helped on Wayne Turk’s free kick.

A mad few minutes after the break saw Lewis Tasker pull one back before Josh McKenzie was sent off a matter of seconds later.

Nevertheless, the home side were still able to pull level in the 49th minute through Craig Wilding.

However, just before the hour mark Turk fired in a free kick to make it 3-2, and although Ciren missed a penalty late on following a foul on Jon Else, it did not stop them taking three points.

Horgan added: “I nearly said last week that I didn’t expect Ciren to do us any favours.

“But they are a difficult team to play against, you look at their record and they haven’t really been thumped by anyone.

“Obviously we were hoping they would help us out and they have managed to do it.”
