LEE Holmes insisted there was no luck involved as he scored the only goal of the game in Swindon’s 1-0 victory over Northampton yesterday.
The 25-year-old saw a lot of the ball during the clash with the Cobblers, and cut inside seven minutes into the second half before delivering a cross which found its way through a body of players and into the Northampton net.
While the Southampton loanee accepted his effort was not a shot, he insisted he intended to give his cross a chance of finding the back of the net.
“I wanted to get it on my left foot and I knew if I whipped it in I had a chance because of the wind,” he said.
“I knew that I wanted to put the ball in and around the keeper, and if I did that I knew I would have a chance of scoring, and fortunately I did.
“It is nice that no-one has touched it and that it went in for my goal, but I would have been pleased if someone had touched it as well.”
The victory over Adie Boothroyd’s side followed a win by the same scoreline at Morecambe on Good Friday, and Holmes was pleased with his side’s work over the Easter period.
“We knew before the game it was one we could take three points from, and we have done that to move ourselves one step closer to promotion,” he said.
“If you had offered us six points from this weekend we would have been happy, so to take that many points was great even if the performance wasn’t the best.
They are on a good run of form and we knew what they would like to come and do, we never really had a true grip on the game but it is a massive result.”
Holmes has impressed since joining on loan from Southampton, and admitted he would consider making his move to the County Ground a permanent one.
“I seem to really settle in here,” he said. “I had a fantastic spell the first time and now it just seems to have really taken off again.
“If something comes about it would be a massive decision for me, because I love it here.
“Nothing has happened yet, because we need to concentrate on getting promotion and then we will see what happens once we know where we are.”
