TOWN boss Paolo Di Canio is convinced the club’s supporters will be able to celebrate winning promotion back to League One in the next few days.
Town’s 1-0 home victory over Northampton yesterday has left them only one win away from making sure of promotion, which they can secure with victory over Plymouth Argyle at the County Ground on Saturday.
For that to happen Swindon will be hoping rivals Crawley lose at home to AFC Wimbledon, but even if the Red Devils do pick up maximum points, Town can secure their place in League One three days later if they win at Aldershot.
While Di Canio accepts the job is not done, the Italian has urged the Town faithful not to worry.
“Of course we should not switch off because you never know, but we are a positive team and we are confident we can celebrate," he said.
“It is obvious we can lose five games in a row and other teams can win five games in a row, and maybe in five games time I will be sitting here feeling like a joker.
“The job is not done, but if fans are worried we will not go up they have to be absolutely negative people in general life.
“But I am arrogant, and we are nearly to go up.
“The players have to understand the job is not done, but I feel confident because I know my players. In the way they play and the way they commit they make me feel like we are very close and that in the next few days we are going to go up.”
Despite promotion only being three points away, Di Canio is focused on picking up the five wins needed to secure the league title and pass the 100-point barrier.
“We can go up because we are very close, but we can also go up with a winning mentality because we want to do something really special which has not been done in the history of this league,” he said.
“Everybody wants to come and play us here because we are at the top and we are the best.
“We are greedy people and we want to win and win and win and make history.”
Meanwhile, Town have announced they will play Crystal Palace in a pre-season friendly at the County Ground on August 8.
