STAND-IN skipper Alan McCormack believes the Swindon squad will have let themselves down if they do not win the League Two title.
Town can claim promotion on Saturday with a home victory over Plymouth combined with defeats for either Torquay or Crawley, but with Swindon seven points clear at the top of the league, simply gaining promotion will not be enough for the ambitious Irishman.
“For me it has got to be the title now,” he said. “We have not come this far and put so much of ourselves into the season not to win the title.
“We have been through some battles and we have not gone through all of that just to take promotion. That is not me and it is not any of the lads.
“We are not even looking at second, third and fourth place, we are looking at the fact we are seven points clear of Torquay at the top of the league.”
While the defender is convinced Swindon will go on to win the league, he is also wary of celebrating too early, and wants the 100-point barrier to motivate his squad to keep going until the end of the season.
“We have not spoken massively about promotion but we have said that we have to keep winning every game,” he said.
“We have to prepare well every time and keep ticking them off.
“That is what we will try and do again on Saturday, and we can not switch off or lose our focus in any way because that is when we could slip up.
“We should be doing it, and we are not even going to think about it because we are going to win this league. I think we can get 101 points which is rare in any division.
“We want to set that record because it will give us an amazing lift going into the summer.”
The 28-year-old has been Town’s stand-out performer in recent weeks, but admitted the absence of captain Paul Caddis and Matt Ritchie has made it difficult for the rest of the squad to maintain their sparkling form.
“We have missed Matt and Cadds over the last few weeks, and you can see what they offer to our team in making us fluid,” he said.
“But the lads that have come in have done well too and we have just won three in a row which is very tough to do, especially with two long away trips, so we have to take a lot from that because we dug in deep.
“You do not always have to dominate teams to get results, you just have to do the right things and the results come, and we have shown that.”
