IF SWINDON Town can win promotion to League One tomorrow it would comfortably be the biggest achievement of Ronan Murray’s career.
Town will go up if they beat Plymouth at the County Ground and Torquay lose at home to Southend or Crawley lose to AFC Wimbledon, but it will not be the first time the Irishman has won promotion.
The Ipswich loanee went up with Erris United Under 12s in his homeland nearly a decade ago, but the 20-year-old has not even come close to repeating the trick until now.
“When I was back in Ireland I was promoted from Division Two to Division One with my Under 12s team, and that was a great year for us. But that is all I have managed,” he said.
“I played midfield back then if you can believe that, and I thought I was a little bit of a Roy Keane type figure. I moved on up to the forwards because of my pace.
“I got to a couple of quarter finals with my county team but that is it, so promotion with Swindon would comfortably be the highlight of my career so far.”
While the promotion party could begin tomorrow, Murray is more concerned with picking up three more points to help his side clinch the League Two title.
“It could, potentially, be a very good weekend, but we can not think about that and we need to make sure we beat Plymouth in the first place,” he said.
“Paolo has kept our minds on the job very well, he wants us to aim for the records we can get.
“We are going to fight to the end to get promotion, and our aim is to win every game between now and the end of the season, and that is how he has prepared us.”
Murray is hoping to come up against a familiar face tomorrow in his long-term friend Conor Hourihane, who is expected to be on the Argyle bench.
“It will be good to see Conor because we played together all over Ireland in youth teams and then he came from Sunderland to Ipswich too,” he said.
“He stayed there for a year-and-a-half which was good, before going down to Plymouth which has been good for him.
“He was my golfing buddy in Ipswich and we got on very well. We speak to each other now and again, and I think I will give him a bit of a text before the game.”
