ALAN McCormack is expecting Swindon’s game with Plymouth tomorrow to be a scrappy affair, but is confident his side will get the three points they need to potentially secure promotion.
A Swindon victory coupled with defeat for either Torquay or Crawley will result in an immediate return to League One, but McCormack is convinced Town will have to battle to take the win.
“We need to play the way we have been recently and grind out the results, even if the football is not all that pretty.
“Sometimes it will not be, and we just need to be patient and see out the first 15 minutes because they are coming here desperate for points. But we just have to be hard to beat, and produce the quality we can produce which I am sure will be enough.
“I think games like this are never really pretty and it is going to be similar to the last few games, although I hope it isn’t because they have been pretty dull and it is not great sitting at the back watching.
“If the results are going our way then I am sure we will know about it, but I do not think we will be looking at Torquay or Crawley’s scores.”
Since stepping up to replace Paul Caddis as skipper while the full back has been out injured McCormack has been Town’s stand-out performer, but after only switching to the centre of the defence earlier in the season he did not expect to be a contender for the player-of-the-year award.
“I am quite enjoying it at the back, although I would like to go back into midfield just to get the feel of it,” he said. “I think I am doing quite well at the moment and I am enjoying it, so I just want to keep doing that.
“I enjoyed the first game and thought, ‘I could do this for a little bit longer,’ but it was never suggested it was going to be for a long period of time.
“We have been working on it every week and working on our shape and it has seemed to have come naturally to me, so maybe I was in the wrong position in the first place.
“If a new manager ever came in or I ever did go elsewhere then I have two positions to play in, and I am comfortable in both. I spoke to my agent the other night and he asked me what I was going to put on my CV, and I said to him I didn’t know. He put both in the end I think.”
Meanwhile, Town fans are still in the dark on whether they will be able to attend the away trip to Gillingham due to a row over policing costs.
Gillingham were in talks with police yesterday but no resolution was agreed and the ban on supporters attending the match on April 21 still stands.
