SWINDON manager Paolo Di Canio has been named on the shortlist for the best goal in the history of the Premier League.
Di Canio’s iconic strike for West Ham against Wimbledon in the 1999/00 season is one of 10 goals put forward for the awards to celebrate 20 seasons of Premier League football.
Faced with an impossible angle, the Italian left the floor and fired a diagonal pass back past keeper Neil Sullivan and into the back if the net.
West Ham went on to win the match 2-1, but the game has been remembered ever since for Di Canio’s stunning goal.
Di Canio has been nominated alongside impressive company, which reads as a who’s who of the last 20 years.
Matt Le Tissier had a reputation for spectacular goals, and has made the list twice, firstly for his effort which saw him weave his way between the entire Newcastle defence before scoring and secondly for his long range effort against Blackburn.
Tony Yeboah’s effort which cracked off the underside of the bar for Leeds against Liverpool in 1995/96 has also made the list, as it was the stand-out goal of that season.
As well as being beaten for Di Canio’s effort, Neil Sullivan also finds himself involved in David Beckham’s shot from inside his own half, which sailed over his head and into the net.
Other categories include the best game, best celebration, best save and best player.
