SWINDON manager Paolo Di Canio will receive 100 per cent backing from the club’s board as he stamps out the unprofessionalism which he claims has infected his squad.

Following Tuesday night’s 2-1 defeat at Aldershot, Di Canio accused his players of taking their eyes off the ball and celebrating promotion before it had been officially secured.

The Italian revealed he was unhappy with a late night drinking session involving a number of his squad on Saturday night, which saw a number of first-team regulars dropped to the bench for the game at the EBB Stadium.

Di Canio has also threatened to ring the changes for Saturday’s game at Gillingham, and suggested some players could see their time at the County Ground brought to an end if they did not quickly change their ways.

Interim chairman Jeremy Wray has been impressed with the way Di Canio has worked to instil discipline into his squad since arriving in the summer, and offered his manager his full support in any decisions he makes over the future of any of the club’s players.

“Paolo will continue to have our 100 per cent support when it comes to things like this,” Wray said.

“The whole basis of the success we have had this season has been founded on the new regime of discipline and professionalism that Paolo has strived to introduce to the squad during the season, and he will not allow anything to get in the way or undermine that.

“We will back Paolo to deal with this the way he sees fit, and I think that is only right given how far he has got us this season with his hard work.

“Every action he takes always is in line with what he believes, and that is the utmost professionalism at all times.

“He has shown exactly that this week, which has been a very tough one for him, and he has not let his focus drop despite everything he has had to deal with.

“He will defend and back his players in any situation, but all he asks is that they show him the respect he asks of them.”
