SWINDON sealed promotion to League One this afternoon despite suffering a 3-1 defeat against Gillingham at Priestfield.
A goal from Danny Kedwell and two from Chris Whelpdale secured the win for the home side, despite Alan McCormack grabbing one back.
But despite the defeat, a 2-0 loss for Torquay away at AFC Wimbledon and a 1-1 draw for Crawley at Dagenham means that Town have been promoted.
Shrewsbury drew 1-1 at Accrington, so a win for Town at home to Port Vale next weekend will see them clinch the League Two title.
Kedwell gave the home side the lead against the run of play with a looping header from a Charlie Lee throw, after Town had controlled much of the opening half.
After going a goal down Town continued to have much of possession, but could not find a way through before half time, and were lucky to only be a goal down as first Liam Montrose thundered an effort against the bar, and as the ball was worked back into the box, Chris Whelpdale should have scored but his header went wide.
Town again had the better of things after the break, but a ball into the box from Chris Whelpdale found its way into the back of the net to double the Gills’ lead.
A superb driving run and shot got Town back into it, but they could not find another goal, and Whelpdale completed the scoring from the penalty spot with the last kick of the game.
