WHILE promotion felt sweet for everyone involved at Swindon Town on Saturday, it is fair to say it felt even sweeter for Simon Ferry.

The Scottish midfielder, along with Matt Ritchie and Paul Caddis, was part of the side which was relegated from League One last season, but has since played a key role in helping the club bounce back at the first opportunity.

“It was about this time last year we were relegated at Sheffield Wednesday, and that should not have happened the way it did,” he said.

“This season has been a long hard season, and I think we have got our just rewards.

“For me it has been a complete turn of emotions and it feels great.

“The last two years have been tough, but we have stuck at it and stuck together, and for that I think we have got what we deserve.”

Ferry has enjoyed an up and down time since moving to the County Ground, with a play-off final defeat followed by relegation and subsequently promotion, but the Scot is pleased to see the club finally on the up and is looking forward to plying his trade in League One once again.

“I have never really had a normal season here, one season has been brilliant, then the next has been bad and I would just like a normal season now,” he said.

Ferry was disappointed to lose the game at Priestfield 3-1, but admitted the players had a hunch results had gone their way elsewhere in the division to secure their promotion.

“The first 25 minutes we started really well, but then they scored and we went into our shell a bit,” he said.

“Their fans got behind them then and they took the ascendency from then on.

“When we went to 2-1 we wanted a second to get the point we knew could secure it for ourselves, but once they scored the third our fans were still celebrating and we sort of knew.

“We wanted to get a win or a draw for them, but we are sorry we didn’t.

“But after the last nine months we want to secure the title. We have been top of league for two months, and we have a great chance of securing it against Port Vale next week.”

SWINDON Town’s youth team finished their season in style with an impressive 8-0 victory over Yeovil Town at the County Ground.

Harry Grant gave Town the lead after six minutes, before Alex Ferguson and Miles Storey made it 3-0 before half time.

Ben Whitefield scored twice after the break before Storey added another, before Connor Waldon and Eddie Stevens completed the rout.

The result saw Town finish third in the league, and manager Paul Bodin was proud of his players after a number were told the day before the game that they were being let go by the club.

“I have to say, their attitude was amazing,” Bodin said.

“It was a traumatic day for a lot of them the day before, but they all coped well and put in a superb display.

“Obviously Miles (Storey) and Leigh Bedwell will be staying on now they have a pro contract, but we will make sure we help the other in whatever their next step is.”
