SWINDON Spitfires Ladies ended their season in style with a 2-1 victory over Bishop’s Lydeard in the South West Women’s League.
Spitfires showed they could mix it with any side in the league as they beat a home side who could have claimed second place in the league, and were coming off a superb victory in the Somerset County Cup.
Spitfires were able to exploit the pace of Kayleigh Reeves and Catt Baird to get in behind the home defence early on, although the first chance of the game fell to Nat Haigh in the sixth minute when her shot cannoned off the upright and away to safety.
The visitors continued to dominate much of the ball, and Baird won possession back wide on the right and raced past the full back before fizzing the ball across the goal to Vicky Wilkes at the far post.
The latter calmly looked up and picked out Debbie Rose who drove home from five yards out to give Spitfires the lead.
The home side forced their way back into the game, though it wasn’t until the 20th minute that Julia Caton in the Spitfires goal was called into action, and when she was rounded after 40 minutes, Spitfires’ player of the match Laura Mason was there to clear before the ball crossed the line.
Bishops upped the pace in the second half, and a defensive slip by Spitfires after 71 minutes gifted the hosts an equaliser.
But the visitors kept plugging away, and regained their lead within two minutes as Baird broke down the right and slotted in her first of the season to secure the points.
Spitfires next game is against Swindon Town Ladies in the final of the Wiltshire Cup, and the club’s reserves made it a cup double for the club by getting through to the final of the Wiltshire League Cup after seeing off Melksham United 2-1 thanks to goals from Caroline Hook and Kristina Digweed.
The club’s under 13s beat Summertown Stars 5-0 and the under 10s beat Kidlington by the same score, but the under 12s lost 5-1 to Benson United and the under 15s crashed 8-0 at Tower Hill.
- SWINDON Town Ladies go into next weekend’s cup final on the back of a 4-3 defeat at home to Newbury.
The home side did create chances but didn’t put them away, and Newquay capitalised on some very poor defending.
The Swindon goalscorers were Georgia Walters, Hayley Huckin and Michelle Rich.
The clubs under 14s took a big leap towards their second league title with a 12-0 victory at Tower Hill Vixens.
Goals from Amy Jolliffe (5), Jessica Graham (3), Sophie Boycott (2), Morgan Harding and Chloe Brown saw Swindon overpower a hard-working Vixens side.
