WES Foderingham is set to return to the Swindon side for Saturday’s potential title clinching game with Port Vale after boss Paolo Di Canio forgave him and three other players for their part in a night out which saw them dropped from his squad.

The goalkeeper, along with Joe Devera, Luke Rooney and Lee Cox, were barred from travelling to face Gillingham on Saturday after Di Canio discovered they were also involved in the incident following Town’s victory over Plymouth, for which five players came out and apologised publicly.

Foderingham’s omission was the most eye-catching following his superb form after arriving from Crystal Palace, but Di Canio was unhappy the four players let their teammates take the blame for the incident and asked them to apologise.

The situation is now resolved and the Italian is hoping to put the events of the last week behind him and his squad, and insisted everyone was now available for selection.

“They are all absolutely back,” he said.

“I was unhappy the first time because they went out three days before a crucial game in which they could have secured promotion.

“But five players came out and apologised to everyone because they have the privilege to be footballers and need to behave differently to people who have a more normal job.

“After what has happened, for the other four players to not come out and then try to escape did not make me enjoy it.

“Not for me, but because in the dressing room there was not a good mood or a good feeling between each other, but this is normal and is not something incredible.

“We decided not to bring them with us, and that was tough, especially for Wes and also Joe because they have been crucial.

“I made the decision because I wanted to have a relaxed situation and no friction, and also bring the players who take responsibility onto the field to play their football.

“In the long run I think I did the right thing because until that day everybody behaved well and focused their attention on the game.”

In Foderingham’s absence Di Canio was pleased with how deputy Phil Smith performed at Priestfield, and suggested the 32-year-old would have been challenging for a place in the side in any case.

“In the Aldershot game Wes made a bad mistake for his quality, because he left the ball there in the middle of the goal,” he said.

“It is no accident this happened three days after he went out, and Phil should contend the place with him.

“The first goal at Gillingham was a lob, then the second goal in the way it went in was incredible. I do not know if he meant it to go into the top corner, but even Gianluigi Buffon could not save this goal, and the third goal was a penalty.”
