SWINDON manager Paolo Di Canio believes his side’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Port Vale this afternoon was the perfect way to win the League Two title.
A brace from Paul Benson and goals for Matt Ritchie, Aden Flint and Alan Connell made sure the trophy was won in style, as thousands of fans poured onto the pitch at the final whistle to celebrate with the team.
Di Canio was proud to see his side blow Vale away with a dominant second half display, and to celebrate with the club’s fans long after the end of the game.
“This is obviously the perfect way for us to win and thanks for the fans, and it was a fantastic performance for us to finish at the top,” he said.
“We deserve to be called champions now, and the players and fans have been amazing, as have my technical staff.
“It is an amazing moment, and I should be more relaxed and elastic. The players asked if they could come back in on Friday, and I said ‘no chance, instead Wednesday’ because I want to win the last game and make our fantastic season special by getting another win and 95 points.”
The Italian will allow himself to celebrate his and his team’s success this evening, and will be joined by his brothers who have made the trip over from Italy.
“I told my players I am going to have a beer, but not too much for my stomach.
“I will have a beer with my brothers who were in the stand today, they could not come over before because they were looking after my parents, but I am very happy they are here to celebrate with me.”
