STRIKER Paul Benson believes winning the League Two title is a miraculous achievement considering Swindon Town’s difficult start to the season.
Benson scored twice as Town beat Port Vale 5-0 to wrap up the title in front of their own fans, but was an interested spectator at the start of the season as Town lost four of their first five league games to sit 21st in the table.
Since his move from Charlton Benson’s goals have helped Town go on an unstoppable surge towards the title, but the 32-year-old was quick to praise the players that have been at the club all season for the way they recovered from a testing start.
“It’s a special day because players can play their whole careers without winning anything, and you have to take time out to savour things like this because winning leagues is not easy,” he said.
“The players need to just realise what they have done because it is brilliant, especially after the start they have had.
“They dug in all season, and I have only been here since January so it has been easy for me, but the momentum they had built up carried them through.
“They need to take a lot of credit for how they have turned things around because it is nothing short of a miracle.”
Benson struck twice to settle the Town nerves and put his side 3-0 up, and his first came following a superb team move culminating in a great flick by Simon Ferry which allowed the striker to lift the ball over Chris Martin.
The former Charlton striker’s second came following good work from Lee Holmes, and he was quick to praise the quality of the players around him.
“The first one was brilliant and the one touch passing, and the touch from Simon Ferry is what he is all about,” Benson said.
“It was a moment of magic and he put me through and I had the simple task of putting it in the net, I was just in the right place to finish it off.
“It is all about the play leading up to it, and that was superb all afternoon.”
