STRIKER Paul Benson believes he has unfinished business in League One and can’t wait to prove his doubters wrong when he returns to the third tier with Swindon Town next season.

The 32-year-old began the campaign at eventual League One champions Charlton, and made one league and two cup appearances for Chris Powell’s side in August and September before being frozen out of the team completely.

His exile prompted a move to Swindon where Benson has since fired 12 goals as Paolo Di Canio’s side won the League Two title, and the veteran is looking forward to proving he is capable of making the step up once again. “When I arrived here I came with the aim of getting back into League One as soon as possible, because I don’t think I really had a fair crack at it before,” he said.

“So I am going to go back there and try and prove a few people wrong. It was hard to leave Charlton and I knew they were going to do well this year.

“I could have hung around and hoped for injuries but I wanted to be more proactive and go out and play games, and when the offer of coming to Swindon came up it didn’t take long to think about it because I knew the club was going to go places.”

Benson is confident Swindon will more than hold their own in League One, but expects more competition to arrive in his position over the summer.

“As soon as I came to the club I knew the manager here demanded hard work, and that is a massive part of being successful as a team,” he said. “I think it needs some new additions as any squad does, and funnily enough I think we probably need a couple of forwards, which is funny to say being a striker myself.

“We need a bit more competition in that area, and some little bits here and there, not a major overhaul. It just means you have to put in that extra bit of effort in training and perform well to stay in the team.

“There is not a great deal of difference in quality between League One and League Two, and the top teams in the league have got a higher quality of player in them.

“But the top six in League Two are as good as the top half of League One I think, they have a bit of money to spend, but Swindon should not be worried at all about competing in League One.”
