A HOST of young football teams will go for glory this weekend when they compete in the North Wilts Youth League cup finals.
All the games will be held at the County Ground where the youngsters will aim to imitate their Swindon Town heroes who regularly play there.
The finals will take place on Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday so as not to clash with Town’s title celebrations on Sunday.
The weekend could end up being a particularly successful one for ex-Town winger Don Rogers, the president of the North Wilts Youth league, because three of his grandchildren are playing in two different finals.
First up Jack Paines will take to the field for Swindon Rangers A under 10s, who kick off the weekend’s action at 9.30am when they take on Highworth Town Juniors H.
Ben Paines and Josh Bird will then turn out for the team Rogers manages, Shaw under 14s, who face Salisbury City on Bank Holiday Monday.
“I’m more excited than all of them, that’s the problem,” joked Rogers.
“It’s great for me having them all there with one on Saturday and two on the Monday.
“I’ve been managing my team (Shaw) with Andy Ratcliffe for five years and they have improved a lot all of a sudden.
“I’ll be very upset if we don’t win the cup and we are firm favourites, but you never know in a one-off game.
“My lads are all Swindon fans so they will love playing at the County Ground.”
After Swindon Rangers begin proceedings on Saturday, FC Abbey Meads Youth and FC Chippenham meet, before Cirencester Town A and Liden Community play the first game of the afternoon.
Downend Rangers and Stanley Park Youth are next up with Wickham Wanderers and Wroughton Youth completing the day.
There are just four games on Bank Holiday Monday with Greenmeadow Youth clashing with Rodbourne first of all.
FC Calne A and Wroughton Youth are second on before FC Chippenham A and Greenmeadow Youth take to the pitch.
Completing the day’s play are Rogers’ Shaw outfit against Salisbury.
