KELVIN Young will travel to America today hoping to land himself a world title shot.
The IBO super-middleweight inter-continental champion is heading to the Chicago to be at ringside to see Donovan George and Dyah Davis battle it out for the vacant world belt on Saturday night.
And the Penhill pugilist and his trainer Richard Farnan are hoping to meet with both challengers ahead of the fight at the US Cellular Fields (the home of MLB side Chicago White Sox) to try and secure a shot at the new champion.
Young, who would be eligible to face the new champion due to being the inter-continental title holder, will meet both George and Davis at Friday’s weigh-in, with the hope of setting up a further meetings over the weekend.
Farnan said: “We are looking forward to getting out to Chicago, being ringside and seeing a good night of boxing.
“But we are also going to the weigh-in and we will be able to introduce ourselves personally to both Donovan, his people, Dyah and his people.
“We have already made contact with them both, we will be hoping to speak to Dyah’s management on the Saturday morning with the hope of arranging a secondary meeting on the Sunday.
“We have already had talks with Donovan and he is very positive to the idea, so we will meet up when we get to Chicago and then hopefully meet again on the Sunday.
“If we can, we are hoping that we will return home next week with a world title shot on the cards for Kelvin.”
Young, whose last fight was a brutal war with Francis Tchoffo at the Oasis Leisure Centre in June, is set to fight again this autumn.
However, any potential target and fight has been put on hold until the pair have returned from the Windy City.
“Kelvin is pretty chilled at the moment,” Farnan said.
“We have been ticking over in the gym, but the problem we have got is we don’t know what we are aiming for at the moment.
“Once we know what is happening then it will be all systems go, and if it is not a world title shot, then we will look at defending Kelv’s belt or even an interim title.”
As well as heading to Chicago this week, a fund-raiser was held at the Asiana restaurant for Young, Farnan and fellow super-middleweight Tariq Quaddus to help send them on a training camp at the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles.
“It was a good night,” Farnan said. “We raised about £400, which was good for such an intimate dinner.
“We are now looking at a second fund-raiser, probably an open day and once we have got enough money then we are off to the Wild Card for some quality training.”
