KELVIN Young is already thinking about the first defence of his Southern Area super-middleweight title after beating Martin Robbins at the Oasis on Friday night.
The Swindon fighter kicked on from the sixth round after his opponent edged the opening stages to take the contest on points, and while Young was proud of the way he performed, he is already looking to the future.
“I have got this title now so I want to try and defend it against a good name, and there are a few people out there,” he said.
“This is what I have been dreaming of all my life, to win titles like this. This is my second title and I am 24 and still learning all the time, so I need to carry on going out there and making Swindon proud.
“Myself and Keith (Mayo, manager) will sit down and have a think to make sure it is the right opponent, and then I will be back in the gym training again.
“I am still only young but winning this title can open a lot of doors for me, and I will be looking to learn as much as I can from having this belt.”
In the run up to the contest Young pounded the streets of Swindon in a bid to increase his fitness levels, and was glad to see his hard work pay off.
“The plan was to go out there and get behind the jab, and I knew he was going to come out of the blocks fast,” he said.
“It was his first ten round fight and he was here to win the title, and he came out as we thought he would.
“It was close in the early rounds like we expected, but I always knew I was going to up it as the fight went on and I managed to do that.
“The key was definitely fitness and running. I had a lack of sparring which I would try and change for next time, but the key was the fitness.
“I was still picking him off early on and I don’t think there was much in it at the start, but all of the road work I have done has paid off and that is great.”
Robbins and his camp were convinced he had done enough to take the belt himself, but the Bristol fighter was gracious in defeat and was full of praise for Young.
“It was the first time I have fought ten rounds and I am pleased to be able to have gone that distance, but I am disappointed not to have won because I thought I fought well,” he said.
“Kelvin fought very well and was a tough opponent, and I wish him well in the future.
“I will go away now and have a bit of a rest before deciding what to do next, and then I will be back into the gym.”
