SWINDON captain Liam Tucker believes that debutant teenager Tom Codling could have a big future in the sport.
The Wiltshire under 17s bowler made his first team bow for the County Ground side on Saturday and took a wicket in his first over as Swindon defeated basement side Westbury and District by six wickets.
And Tucker was delighted with how Codling made the step up into the Glos/Wilts Division.
“Tom did really well on debut,” Tucker said. “He came on first change, took a wicket in his first over and bowled line and length.
“He had been playing well in the seconds and deserved his chance with the firsts and the way he played on Saturday he could have many years of first team cricket ahead of him.
“These youngsters seem to take it all in their stride and the step up certainly didn’t faze Tom and there are some exciting times ahead for him.”
Swindon went into Saturday’s match knowing that they were unlikely to win promotion, while relegation was just as remote.
While Westbury were fighting for survival, Tucker was pleased with how his side maintained their focus and ensured that claimed an emphatic victory.
“To bowl a side out for 119 shows that it was a good day,” the Swindon skipper said. “If we are brutally honest, they got a few too many.
“We had the 40-8 and they still managed to get 119.
“In reply we probably gave a couple of wickets away, but we always knew that we were going to be able to get 120.”
Only Westbury skipper Alex Senneck provided any resistance for the hosts as he scored 90 of the 119, while extras were the next highest scorer with 11.
Swindon’s stike bowler Matthew Kidd did the majority of the damage as he claimed 4-7 from his 10 overs.
In reply, Jon Sore top scored with an unbeaten 47, while opener Marc Williamson laid the platform with a steady 38 as Swindon eased home at the end of the 25th over.
