WILTSHIRE LEAGUE: PURTON maintained their unbeaten start to the Division One campaign with a 52-run triumph over Nationwide House.
Asked to bat on a wet wicket, Adam Miles added the necessary momentum after they had been restricted to 45-2, taking the score to 87.
A middle-order collapse left Purton 102-6, but a superb 79-run partnership between Miles (66) and Adam Woolford (27) left Purton in a strong position, closing their innings on 193.
Despite the loss of Harris, Nationwide reached 56 after 10 overs, but when Carter removed Vincent for an aggresive 44 in 30 balls the scoring rate slowed.
Purton continued to take wickets and, despite Clarke making 27, Purton claimed victory in the 38th over, thanks to spin bowlers Nick Carter (3-24) and Tom Bowler (4-21).
Malmesbury picked up a seven-wicket win against Bath Civil Service to move into fifth place.
Fielding first, Malmesbury made early breakthroughs as Rich Jefferson picked up a couple of victims.
Rich Mosdell, having switched ends, also bagged two wickets, but the best bowler on the day was young Sam Higginbottom, who powered into the strong wind yet still managed to pick up three wickets as Civil Service finished on 122 all out.
On a drying pitch, Ant Brown (27) made early inroads after John Ritchie and Higginbottom had departed.
But it was left to the stalwarts Jeremy Newman and Richard Gaunt to build a match-winning partnership.
Newman (52 not out) and Gaunt (43 not out) picked up batting bonus points and took Malmesbury to 125-3.
Box recorded their first win of the season by five wickets at Calne.
The home side were restricted to 166-8, which included a patient 62 from Chris Downham and 35 from Steve Richards.
Two well-taken catches on the boundary from Clive Parsons typified a disciplined fielding display and he also contributed a tidy spell of eight overs for 24 runs, with Dave Crawford taking 2-47 and Neil Pettit 2-39.
A partnership of 80 between Tony Trotman (69) and Gerald Hayward (50) then set up victory.
Downham and Windsor (both 2-24) caused a couple of scares towards the end before Crawford completed the win with a six.
Lechlade bounced back after their defeat against Bassett with a grittywin against newly-promoted Potterne.
After being invited to bat, Lechlade found themselves at 60-4 off 18 overs with Rikki Jackson taking 5-61 in total.
Nigel Pearce (23) and man of the match Rizwan Hassan (80) dug in before Rizwan went on the attack.
With a late flurry of wickets Lechlade closed on 182 all out, with Fred Kerley picking up 4-38.
In reply, Potterne struggled against Paul Godding (1-22) and Rizwan (2-26 in his opening spell).
P Oliver (31), S Gaiger (25) and J Down (28) all got going but Lechlade managed to keep the breaks on as Ejaz Khan (2-35) and Damon Livermore (3-11) left Potterne all out on 133.
DIVISION FOUR
Purton 2nds lost the toss for the third time this season and his side were asked to bat against their Nationwide House counterparts.
The father and son opening partnership of Dave and Gavin Allen took advantage of loose early bowling to reach 45 from nine overs before Allen senior fell for 17.
At the 11 over point, Purton were racing along at 70-1 before a collapse saw them all out for 99 in the 25th over, the high point of the innings being Allen jnr's 45.
Strong finished with 5-17 and Reivers 4-41.
Nationwide batted for 10 overs, reaching 37-2 before the tea interval.
Early wickets fell to Neil and Craig Miles.
With just over 60 needed and plenty of overs, Nationwide looked well set for victory.
However,the Purton bowlers had other ideas. The Miles' struck again, picking up two wickets in quick succession to bring some doubt in the visiting batsmen's minds.
Slow bowler Dunn (3-16) weighed in with three wickets in a hurry, leaving Dale with two wickets to wrap up victory in the 26th over.
DIVISION FIVE
Highworth completed their third win of the season with a 125-run win away at Urchfont 2nd.
Scoring 201-7 with useful contributions by Craig Bell (57), Mark Thatcher (47) and Joe White (37 not out), Highworth were always in control restricting their hosts to 76 all out, with three wickets apiece for Thatcher, Tony Summers and Lea Beaver.
DIVISION SEVEN
Goatacre 3rd recorded their first win of the season, winning by three wickets against Marshfield 3rd.
Batting first, Marshfield were bowled out for 137 in the 42nd over.
John Iles top scored with 36 before being caught by Chris Chapman off the bowling of Joe Tillyer, who finished with 2-22 off 7 overs.
Despite Geoff Hall's 4-31 off 10 overs, Goatacre comfortably passed the target in the 41st over.
Openers Chapman (22) and Richard Grigg (15) provided a steady start, supported by Ceri Hodgkinson (21) and Dan Horton (17 not out).
Corsham 4th enjoyed a convincing 10-wicket win over Bath Civil Service 2nd with 19 overs to spare.
Skipper Martin Hick won the toss again and inserted the visitors, fully expecting weather interruption at some point during the afternoon.
Civil Service reached 146 all out, Steve Porter top-scoring for them with 63.
For the bowling side, Chris Sanders (4-24) and Chris Bush (3-24) were the pick.
Replying, Corsham had few problems, Peter Dennett smacking an unbeaten 92 not out, while John Gale was also at the crease until the end, knocking 44 not out as they maintained their unbeaten start to the season.
