MARK Vincent has emphasised the importance of run accumulation ahead of his side’s derby match with Swindon in Glos/Wilts One.

After a feeble collapse in the their opening fixture against Stroud, and having watched Swindon’s attack decimate Marshfield resistance, Vincent wants his teammates to show resolve at the crease in the battle of local bragging rights.

“I have probably been thinking too much about this match,” said the Rylands Way skipper.

“We have to go back to basics and be solid out there. We have been looking pretty good in the nets recently, and we’re good on paper, but we need to see it in the performance.”

With seven recognised batsmen extending a powerful middle order, Vincent is quietly confident his team can rack up a sizeable total on what he predicts to be a cooperative strip.

And despite the absence of Luke Bradley-Leach due to a chest injury, Bassett can still call on the dynamic glove-work of youngster Sam Burdock, who steps up from the second team to a place behind the stumps.

“We are looking to go out there and attack,” said Vincent. “We’ve tried to get experience in there in the middle order but there is a lot of young talent at the top who can all get good runs.

“If we bat first we will be looking to get 200-plus and back our bowlers to be able to keep Swindon under that.”

Vincent says his squad are eagerly anticipating the contest, and the opportunity to wrestle the region’s top dog status away from their local rivals in a game which could be swayed by both wit and willow.

“It’s got a real psychological element to it, just as much as the actual game itself,” he said.

“But we have to be able to focus on our own game.

“We know Swindon are coming and we know they’ll be up for it, but we have to concentrate and not think about what everyone else is doing if we want to be in with a shot.”
