RODBOURNE CHENEY Working Men's Club are into the last eight in the CIU national team competition.

Previous multiple winners of the national singles title but the team title only once, Cheney's hopes of adding a second stayed on course.

But they had to do it the hard way against Welsh opponents Gelli and Ton Pentre Hibernia WMC & Institute (Mid-Glamorgan), coming from behind for a 3-2 win.

Most of Cheney's team had warmed up by competing in the Dave Cummins Memorial Cup and won the first leg with ease.

But they suffered double trouble in the second, losing it despite Ton Pentre still wanting over 500 when Cheney were down to a double.

And the Swindon club were rocked in the next when the Welshmen went 2-1 up.

But Cheney fought back to win leg four and take deciding leg to clinch a place in the last eight as Savvery checked-out with Ton Pentre still needing almost 500.

Rodbourne will not know their next opponents for a week or so as the closing date for this round is not until next weekend.

Team: Mick Savvery, Ian Greenaway, Mark Thomson (replacing Paul Cook), Dennis Smith, Ronnie Baxter, Bob Phillips, Chris Daglish, Danny McGahey
