BOXING: Walcot's Danny Bharj finished his domestic season in style with a first-round stoppage win at Foley ABC's event in Esher, Surrey.

Foley's Steve Ellis was the hapless victim as the Swindon switch-hitter looked to atone for a rare defeat the previous week.

A blistering opening saw the 60kg Junior ABA Champion land with a fast combination of jabs, hooks and uppercuts.

The referee gave Ellis a standing count but this was to prove a temporary respite, as on the resumption Bharj repeated the dose, and the bout was stopped after only 52 seconds of action.

Chief Coach Harry Scott said: "That was a very impressive display and just what Danny needed before his England debut next month."

Bharj is due to box for Young England in a Four Nations Tournament during June, on a date to be confirmed.

Also successful on the night was Walcot Middleweight Jagdave Juggi' Singh.

The 22-year-old Swindonian was involved in an entertaining battle with Chris Maclaren from the host club.

A standing count administered during the middle round helped his cause, and he was awarded a majority points verdict.

Unlucky not to join their victorious clubmates were Josh Mayo and Joe Buckley.

Fourteen-year-old Mayo looked to have won the second and third rounds against home boxer Jake Woods, but did not get the decision.

Similiarly, Buckley, 13, dropped a debatable points decision to Alfie Smith from the host club, when he looked to have won.

Coach Tony Fitzgerald was disappointed with these two decisions, saying: "We should have enjoyed four wins this evening, but often when it's close the home boxer gets the verdict. All four lads did us proud."
