SWINDON Spitfires Under 10s eased past Wantage 4-1 to secure the Oxford Girls League Cup at the weekend.

Spitfires took an early lead through Mia Sanghara but were given a scare when Wantage equalised. However, Eloise Hayward restored the lead before the interval.

In the second half, Mia Mugford added the third before Hayward grabbed her second to ensure Spitfires picked up the trophy.

In the Oxford Girls League U11s Cup final, Spits lost out to Didcot Casuals 2-0 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Both sides battled throughout the first half with Didcot Casuals maintaining a strong grip on the game, forcing Swindon Spitfires to play deep in their own half.

The pressure paid off when Spitfires failed to clear a cross and a Didcot played pounced on the error to take the lead.

Midway through the half Didcot doubled their lead after Spits failed to clear an attack. After the early double-shock Spits began to get a foothold on proceedings, and by half time began to formulate some decent attacks themselves.

Inside four minutes of the second half, Spitfires pulled a goal back through Karolayne Byrom with a close range shot and from then on in Swindon peppered the Didcot goalkeeper with efforts from all over the park.

In the final minute the pressure paid off as Daniella Granato’s shot went in via the post to take the game to extra time.

After a goalless additional two periods, Didcot held their nerve from the spot to claim the silverware.

Spitfires Under 12s made amends for their junior teammates’ failure on penalties as they beat Didcot on spot-kicks after a 1-1 draw.

Jordan O’Donaghue gave Spitfires the lead after some great work down the right, but Didcot snatched an equaliser with a cross-shot from the right wing.

With no further score during extra time it came down to penalties. Didcot missed their first three meaning efforts from Molly Craig, Ffion Williams and Ju Russell secured the cup for Spitfires.

In the Thames Valley League, Spitfires Reserves sneaked past second-placed Unity 3-2, Cat Baird, Lyndsey Ball and Tash Blackwell were all involved in the Spits’ opener, although the goalscorer’s identity remained unknown after the ball spilled over the line following a five-player melee.

Seven minutes into the second period, Spitfires scored again as Ball laid a ball out wide to Baird whose cross found Vicky Wilkes to slot home.

Fourteen minutes from the end, Ball made it 3-0 when she made the most of some confusion between keeper and defender to steal in and fire home.

Unity gave themselves some hope with a goal eight minutes later, and ensured a nervy end to the game with a second in the final minute, but Spits held on.

When Spits’ played Unity for the second time during the weekend, just hours later, the result was somewhat different.

Unity dominated, winning 6-1, with the only Spitfires goal coming from Wilkes.
