WILTSHIRE Women begin their competitive county campaign when they face Cornwall next week.

They will play the Duchy County in their opening South Western Counties League match on the neutral green at Topsham, Exeter on Tuesday, May 18. The team selected contains eight players from the Swindon area.

There are two ladies from the clubs at Stratton Churchway, Westlecot and Purton, while there is single representation for Wroughton and Town Gardens.

Three of the skips selected are former national champion Wendy Anderson (Stratton C), her club colleague and former county president Janet Willis, plus Town Gardens’ Jean Corbett, the 2010 county junior vice president.

The highly successful Box club, who dominated the Wiltshire Women’s County Championships last year, have the biggest representation with five players.

Elsewhere, Westlecot continue their centenary celebrations as their men face a very strong Wiltshire Men’s select side on their own green this coming Saturday (2.30pm).

The special match will also double up as the first Middleton Cup trial of the 2010 campaign.

Westlecot pulled off the county Tourist Trophy and Four Rink League double again last season but will find this special match against the county an extremely tough encounter.

They have to field six and not four rinks as in county league games.

“At six rinks we are a little stretched, especially with a couple of players unavailable,” said team captain Mike Shawyer.

“But we think we will give them a very competitive run out on our own green. We certainly won’t be taking it easy on them.”

Westlecot have been forced into one change as Matt Webster is unavailable as well as a positional switch from the side named two weeks ago.

Nigel Walkley replaces Webster while Jeff Nichols switches rinks to cover at three for Webster, with Walkley taking his spot in John Thomas’ rink.

The Wiltshire team is as previously announced.
