WILTSHIRE are the new Division Four county darts champions after a terrific victory over arch-rivals Humberside.
Before an excited audience at the Phoenex Bar, Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire B ladies got the county off to a fantastic start by inflicting Humberside’s only defeat of the season in the B section.
Carol Bowers fought back from two down to win a last leg decider before lady of the match Erica Hartnett easily defeated her opponent.
Ally Harrison then overcame Dot Edmondson and Wiltshire were three up and on their way to their 19-point target.
Norma Gould was defeated before Ally Thomson put Wiltshire 4-1 up with a 3-1 victory.
Jan Murphy then lost the final match and Wiltshire led 4-2 going into the men’s B section.
Lee Evans was first on and put on a man of the match performance to win 3-0 with a 29.47 average. Paul Boulton clinched his match with a 156 checkout and Wiltshire were 6-2 up.
Terry Smith and David Gould both didn’t get going against two very good players and the score was back to 6-4.
Chris Bailey, Steve Venn, Bob Phillips and Richie Jones then produced excellent victories and Wiltshire were 10-4 up.
Youngster Rob Higginson then recovered from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and when Richard Ettwell did the same the lead was eight.
Mick Duggan and Pete Harris both struggled and lost but the overnight score was Wiltshire 12, Humberside six.
A large audience at the Phoenex saw Jo Hooke thrash her opponent before a nervous Rachel Hutton was overcome by a very strong Humberside player.
Heather Lane was unlucky to lose a last leg decider and the score was 13-8.
Tina Rowland levelled the A ladies score at two each before Ann Paget produced a lady of the match performance in a 3-1 win.
Jill Little then defeated a previously unbeaten opponent and Wiltshire led 16-8 going into the men’s A section.
Steve Willard easily disposed of his opponent and when John Newland won his match with an 11-darter and also the man of the match award, Wiltshire led 18-8 and the party was starting.
Amazingly, Wiltshire then lost the next five matches with defeats for Dave Wicks, Tony Clark, Bob Bowers, Garry Ellis and youngster Chris Aubrey, who lost a great game against Humberside manager Tony Richardson 3-2.
Ian Greenaway shot out on 60 in thefourth leg for a 3-1 victory and Wiltshire were Division Four Champions.
Defeats for Lee Hussey and Ron Ashton did not matter too much but great wins for Chris Daglish for Juan Hopkins sealed a superb season.
Extra bonuses were Divisional wins for the men’s B and also the ladies A who pipped Humberside to that award due to the last day result.
