WANBOROUGH’S Louise Hunt clinched her third women’s doubles title of 2012 as she teamed up with fellow Brit Lucy Shuker to claim the crown at the Northern Counties Wheelchair Tennis Tournament in Sunderland.
The pair beat Dorrie Timmermans and Bianca Osterer 6-1, 6-3 in the semi-finals, as Hunt got revenge on Timmermans for her quarter final loss in the women’s singles competition at the ITF 3 Series event.
The victory set up an all-British final with Debbie Brazier and Val Fisher, in which Hunt and Shuker cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory to claim the title.
The 20-year-old had partnered current British number one Jordanne Whiley to back-to-back titles in Australia in January, but was pleased to win alongside her new partner.
“I really love playing doubles with Lucy, we’ve played so well together since we won the first of our two doubles titles as a pairing last year and have a lot of fun doing it,” said Hunt.
“Last season was a really great year for me and I won lots of doubles titles, so it’s good to have now won my third of 2012 by the beginning of March.”
Hunt’s next tournament is the ITF 2 Series Bavarian Indoors in Germany before she flies to the USA for a series of important tournaments that conclude the qualification period for the London 2012 Paralympics.
Hunt has also thrown her support behind a Tennis Foundation Wheelchair Tennis Camp at the Delta Tennis Centre in Swindon on March 31 and April 1, which she hopes will encourage others to pursue the sport she loves.
“I spent many of my weekends as a young player attending similar camps organised by the Tennis Foundation and had so much fun and made lots of friends,” Hunt said.
“The camps are the ideal way of learning more about wheelchair tennis and getting good advice and coaching right from the start, whether you want to carry on playing the sport just for fun, or have ambitions to go on and play tournaments.”
