JIMMY McDonagh was the only winner of the four Walcot boxers who competed at Earlsfield ABC's 29-contest event in London at the weekend, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

In front of a packed crowd, the 13-year-old met the highly-regarded Gary Hearne from the host club in what proved one of the best bouts of the day.

The Londoner enjoyed a considerable height advantage over the Walcot boxer, and used his left jab to good effect during the opening exchanges.

However, as the bout progressed, McDonagh began to slip inside his opponent's long reach and land with fast straight lefts and rights.

The remainder of the bout saw the Western Counties champion increase his work rate and go on the attack, landing with numerous shots, while Hearne countered where he could.

After three exciting rounds, the ringside judges awarded the Walcot boxer a majority points decision.

His coach Lionel McCrea said: “That was a good display of aggression from Jimmy against a tough opponent.”

Unlucky not to join Jimmy on the winners’ rostrum was younger brother Johnny.

After a close opening round against Earlfield's Luke Hall, the 11-year-old stepped up a gear to boss the next two sessions.

At the final bell he seemed well on top, but to the dismay of the Walcot camp it was Hall who was given a majority points verdict.

National Schoolboy champion Said Eltuyev suffered his first loss of the season with a close points defeat at the hands of Earlfield's Kane Corby.

The talented 13-year-old failed to show his usual sparkle and didn't land enough leather.

Milo Bolton, 12, performed well in defeat against Guildford's Mark Chambers-Smith.

The plucky Commonweal pupil was giving away height, reach and weight but landed with his share of punches during a game points defeat.

Walcot chief coach Harry Scott sid: “All four lads did their best.

“Jimmy boxed very well and beat a good boxer, Johnny was unlucky not to get the decision.

“Milo is improving all the time and will learn from today, whilst Said is a class operator who was a bit below his usual high standards.”
