WILTSHIRE eventing stars Paul Tapner and Laura Collett were both among the winners at the Larkhill BE one day event, held at Knighton Down.
Tapner, who is looking to regain the Badminton title he won in 2010 on top ride Inonothing, topped a BE100 section. This was on a new ride, Ian Murray’s grey Thoroughbred gelding Inishmor, who was at only his second BE event.
West Littleton’s Harry Meade was runner-up on Away Cruising, with Pewsey’s Lizzie Brown third on her six year old mare Bulana.
Membury’s Collett also headed a BE100 section on five-year-old newcomer Controe.
Collett was also second in a novice section, behind Canadian international Michael Winter, on the consistent Obos Colley.
Meanwhile, youngsters Holly Horton and Olivia Hoyland both did the Ridgeway Pony Club proud at the 2012 Dengie Winter League Pony Club show jumping championships at Warwickshire College.
Horton, 15 and from Swindon, was returning to defend the title she won in 2011 on her 13.1hh chestnut mare Sweet Delight.
She made a great start in the opening warm-up class, a one round speed competition, finishing second. Her good form continued when she went clear over a testing first round course.
She then joined 26 other riders, from the close to 90 starters, in the timed jump-off. She was drawn 11th and a very quick time had already been set by Surrey rider Helena Gurdin. Horton made a brave attempt but sadly rolled one pole, putting her just out of the money in 12th.
Hoyland, at 10 one of the youngest qualifiers, also went clear in the opening round on her little 12.1hh pony Alfie. The youngster repeated her clubmate’s performance in the jump-off with one down in a slightly slower time than Horton.
This proved good enough to net the best under 12 award.
