WELSH teenager Luke Cooper produced a superb five-ride maximum to take the spoils in the second round of the Quadzilla QRA British Quad Championships at the Idover Lane circuit near Wootton Bassett at the weekend.

Reigning champion Carl Bunce of Reading was back to his best, coming second after a tremendous battle with Ben Richmond in one race.

Newcomer Mick Hall impressed everyone with fourth place while Reading’s Danny Smith gained two race wins to keep him in the mix.

James Fletcher again showed his liking for muddy conditions and pushed the frontrunners all of the way in a creditable sixth place.

Championship leader Lee Hazelwood dropped to joint seventh alongside veteran John Elliot, which means the battle for the championship is now extremely tight.

Series newcomer Karl Pilcher impressed with a ninth-place finish which included two race wins, whilst another debutant, Cirencester’s Tom Claxton raced well to end up in the top 10 alongside Geoff Glover.

The finals were something of a formality on a soaking track with Bunce pulling well clear in the mud ahead of Richmond and Hall.

Adam Frearson was the dominant force in the Welsh Pitbikes British Dirt Track Mini Bike Championships, but he was pushed by Luke Coker, who came from the back on more than one occasion.

Newcomer Tony Tomasso from Poole was third while while Welsh chargers Mathew Cole and Billy Coles recorded their best ever finishes with fourth and fifth respectively, showing a liking for the wet conditions later in the day.

One man stood out from the crowd in the M & S Truck Rentals British Dirt Track Solo class, and that was Chris Johnson, who bagged a top-drawer maximum.

Only recently out of retirement, Johnson is now joint top of the leaderboard with the injured Swindon-based Lee Smart, while ex-Swindon speedway rider Cory Gathercole is just behind in second Four riders competed in the MX class and there were four wins out of five for local man Andy Hobbs, with Paul Oughton taking the victory in the final race.

Round three of the British Dirt Track Championships will be held at the Abbey Stadium circuit on July 8.
