A ROLLERCOASTER final day at the WGC HSBC Champions saw Swindon’s David Howell finish tied-70th in Shanghai.

The Broome Manor pro fired a closing round of level-par to end up four-over for the tournament.

Howell picked up four birdies at Sheshan International, but a triple-bogey at the eighth and a further dropped shot at 17 meant he was unable to move up the leaderboard.

The WGC-HSBC Champions was the second event of the European Tour’s Final Series, an event Howell won ahead of world number one Tiger Woods in 2006.

This year’s tournament was won by American Dustin Johnson, who ended on 24-under to pick up over €1million in prizemoney.

“I didn't get off to the best start and (Ian) Poulter and McDowell got off to great starts and put a lot of pressure on me, but I am swinging well and putting well so thought just stick to my game plan and play the golf course how I want to play it and it's going to come,” said Johnson.

“I played really well the last few holes on the front nine and then had a great back nine.

“The guys made it really interesting but I just played really well coming down the stretch.

“They put a lot of pressure on me but I am really proud of myself and the way I handled it.”

Meanwhile, Wrag Barn’s Martin Sell experienced a mixed opening couple of days at European Tour Q School at Las Colinas.

The event is the penultimate stage of qualifying for the tour and Sell is currently 39th out of the 77 players in the field.

He had a difficult first round on Saturday as he fired two-over-par, which included four bogeys and two birdies.

However, a better 18 at the Spanish course yesterday put the Swindonian back in the hunt.

Teeing off at the 10th, he carded two birdies and two bogeys before the turn.

But in the final nine holes the 34-year-old was much more consistent and a gain at the par-four fourth (Sell’s 13th) pulled him to one-under for the day and one-over for the tournament.
