WOOTTON Bassett’s The Wiltshire Golf Hotel & Leisure Club again plays host to the Shark Attack Charity Golf Day in aid of Heads Up Head & Neck Cancer Research in Oxford on Friday.
The event will be comprise of a nine-hole Texas Scramble in the morning, followed by an 18-hole Team Bowmaker in the afternoon, with 26 teams taking part and a dinner for over 150 people.
The charity was set up to raise awareness and carry out research into the debilitating illness. Due to the invasive nature of the treatment, it can leave sufferers with very visible scars but also without any sense of taste. .
One of The Wiltshire’s own members, John Hughes, was diagnosed with throat cancer a few years ago and thanks to the skill of the surgeons at John Radcliffe Hospital, he is still enjoying life to the full.
As an avid golfer, Hughes decided to give something back and arranged a golf day with a few friends, raising £300 for the charity.
Last year, its 10th anniversary, the event raised over £12,000. This year the organisers have set a target of £13,000.
“I was overjoyed at the generosity of the players and companies who have supported us, some of whom have done so from the beginning,” said Hughes. “This year is no exception with auction items, prizes and raffle prizes donated valued at over £18,500.”
TV personality and star Ian Irving former captain of the Variety Club Golf Society is the comedian and auctioneer. Irving will also play on the day.
“I was asked if I could help out and I was more than happy to oblige,” he said.
