TEENAGER Kyra Horlock is the new Wiltshire Ladies’ County Champion.

Kyra, 14, who plays off three and is a member at Cumberwell Park, blazed a trail through the 36 holes at Marlborough Golf Club.

She stayed resolute during the knockout stages, eventually beating reigning champion Karen Gosling in the final on Sunday afternoon.

“I was runner-up last year and I was determined to do better this year. It feels great,” Horlock said afterwards.

Runner-up Gosling said: “Obviously I am disappointed not to have won, but as county captain I am delighted to see Kyra playing so well.

“She is a key member of our first team squad this year and we are proud that she will be representing Wiltshire at the South West Inter-County Match week next month.”

Another promising youngster, Sarah Gee from West Wilts, took the Gillian Wood trophy for the winner of the second flight, winning a tight match against Carol Main from Chippenham.

Semi-finalists in the championship were Sophie Newman from Ogbourne Downs and Gill Loughrey from Wrag Barn.

ANDY Gibb won the Men’s Championship at Wrag Barn recently after edging out Josh Plaister in a two-hole play-off.

Having trailed Plaister by two shots at lunchtime, Gibb produced a remarkable gross 75 in challenging conditions to force his way into the shootout.

Both players then made par but at the first extra hole, the 18th, Gibb was able to make the decisive 10 foot par putt to take the title.

“I’ve been playing golf for 20 years, and I’ve always wanted to see my name on one of those boards in the clubhouse,” said Gibb, following his triumph.

“After years of disappointments, it makes it all the more special to finally win the Men’s Championship.

“I hope I can do the double later on in the year and win the club championship.”

Results: 1, Andrew Gibb (78+75=153); 2, Josh Plaister Gross (76+77=153); 3, Andy Spindlar Gross (79+76=155).
