MARTIN Sell finished the 2012 Jamega Pro Golf Tour Winter Series on a high by winning the final event at Studley Wood by one stroke.
The Wiltshire professional returned a blemish-free card that included three birdies and an eagle at the ninth for a five under 68.
Understandably, Sell was delighted to secure victory at the Oxfordshire event.
“It is nice to pick up an early-season win,” he said.
“I hit some good shots, kept the ball in play, had no bogeys and took advantage of the course’s five par fives.”
The Wrag Barn golfer, who finished fourth in the overall 2011 Jamega Pro Golf Tour Order of Merit, has continued to show his class with a good steady start to 2012.
Sell has consistently featured in the Jamega Pro Golf Tour Winter Series top 10, including three top five positions, and the win at Studley Wood took him to the top of the Order of Merit for the series.
“It was a very pleasing day and a great platform on which to build for the coming season.” he added.
Stephen Cronin, Nigel Lane and Mickael Fox all returned to the clubhouse in four-under to claim a share of second place.
But it was a day for Wiltshire players to shine, with Miles Mackman from Broome Manor also presenting a bogey-free card at the end of his round, having secured three birdies to put him in top five with a three-under score of 70.
Gary Harris, co-founder and Director of the Jamega Pro Golf Tour, was extremely pleased at how the event had gone.
He said: “Once again the Studley Wood golf course was prepared in immaculate condition for the time of the year.
“We look forward to coming back in the summer for the main Jamega Tour. Many thanks to Ken Heathcote and his team for providing a great venue.”
Sell will now have a couple of weeks off competition to prepare for the Europro Qualifying School and the main 2012 Jamega Tour season.
n THE final winter season senior stableford was contested at Cirencester Golf Club recently in wet and windy conditions.
All 56 players had a tough time overcoming the inclement weather and it was club president Robert Evans who took top spot in Division One.
Evans collected 35 points and notched up twos on holes 11 and 13, his stronger back nine giving him first place ahead of Dave Warden, who also scored 35.
Finishing on 34 points were Evan Jarrett, Dave Walters and Dave Collett.
Geoffrey Knight bettered his handicap to score 37 and secure victory in Division Two, while Roland Ward took second on countback from Jack Bastow, after the pair both clocked up 36 points.
In addition to Evans’ pair of twos, Warden, Tony Jafrate and Patrick Moylan also achieved a two apiece throughout the day.
