AARON Nell hopes to translate his new coaching knowledge from Team GB to Swindon Wildcats’ game, after spending two weeks with the country’s under 20s squad in Tallinn, Estonia.
Great Britain’s young hopes battled over a five-game group series against countries including Lithuania, Romania, Spain, Korea and the host nation to secure a bronze medal in the Under 20s World Championship Division II.
The series started on a downward note for Great Britain as they lost 4-6 to eventual silver medallists Lithuania before a 13-1 win over Korea.
A further loss to Estonia ended any hopes of promotion to Division I, however comfortable wins over Romania and Spain ensured the tour ended on a high.
Nell admitted to learning a few new coaching tips along the way, and he expects to put them to the test with his Wildcats side ahead of this Saturday’s crunch tie against NIHL South One championship rivals Peterborough Phantoms.
Just one point separates Wildcats from the Phantoms, though the Cambridgeshire outfit do have two games in hand over the Link Centre side.
A regulation time win on Saturday however would lift Nell’s troops back to the summit of the table, despite the club’s wobble in December – which saw them lose six games and win just four.
Nell said: “It was a good two weeks with Team GB, we were disappointed not to get the gold. But to pick up a bronze medal was a good achievement for the players.
“It was a good 12 days and a good experience for me – I personally learnt a lot.
“The plan is to translate a bit of that knowledge into our game now.
“We’re on a good run at the moment, we’ve won our last six games.
“We need to keep that going now and not take our foot off the gas.”
Wildcats’ championship credentials were boosted at the weekend following wins over Invicta Dynamos and Streatham.
While Nell missed Saturday’s game due to commitments with the GB team, the 29-year-old left shooter did return to the ice on Sunday to guide Cats to a 4-5 win at Milton Keynes Thunder.
“We had a great weekend, but Peterborough are still way ahead of us at the moment,” said Nell.
“However, it’s another two points that we have gained and a big four points for us over the weekend - this coming weekend will be tough.”
