SUPERMARINE face Minety in Dorset & Wilts 1 North on Saturday looking to set the record straight.
The South Marston side were trounced 38-5 by tomorrow’s opponents on home soil earlier in the campaign, putting in a performance head coach Sean Millwaters branded their worst of the season.
However, this weekend they have the chance to get their own back, with victory potentially propelling Millwaters & Co to the top of the table if results elsewhere go their way.
“It’s a big game. Minety at our place was probably the worst we’ve played all year,” said Millwaters. “We’ve lost three games all season, two games by a point – Devizes and Bradford away – and in this game we were taken apart in the first 20 minutes.
“This for us is a tester to ensure it doesn’t happen again. We had a really poor 20 minutes that gave Minety the game.
“If the results go in our favour we can be top two or top three certainly. As long as we stay in this group towards the end of the season anything can happen.”
Marine’s scheduled clash with Devizes 2nds was called off a week ago due to a waterlogged pitch and a similar fate could befall tomorrow’s fixture after another seven days of horrendous weather in the region.
If it does go ahead both teams go into the contest a little underbaked, with neither side having played since before Christmas.
Millwaters is convinced the lengthy break will not have affected his players come kick-off, however, and he is eager to get a game in. “No one’s got to rearrange those fixtures, it just would have been nice to have a game going into this weekend because we have a top-of-the-table clash but Minety haven’t played either and unless it stops raining now I’d be very surprised if we played this week,” he said.
“I know our pitches are unplayable and we’ve probably got some of the best pitches around. Hopefully it will all go ahead because we want to play. It’s a big game, though all games are big games in the second half of the season.
“We want to start playing some games of rugby. When we get to the end of January and February we’ll lose games to the frost anyway, as we always do.”
Elsewhere, in Southern Counties North, Swindon College Old Boys host Milton Keynes. Old Boys are still searching for their first victory of the season.
