WOOTTON Bassett maintained their unbeaten home record this season with a thumping 55-5 win over Sherbourne at Stoneover Lane.

Bassett made the breakthrough early on when a simple cut out move from the backs led to debutant winger Frank Black cruising over the line for an unconverted score.

Moments later, the other winger Mark Trowbridge found himself on the score sheet, a breath taking attack from Bassett's own 22 eventually saw the wide man jink his way over the line.

This time, Gary Williamson made no mistake with the conversion as Bassett opened up a 12-0 lead.

Almost immediately, number eight Neil Smith got in on the act as he crashed through the defence in the middle of the park and showed immense strength to drive over and ground the ball, with Williamson converting.

Smith didn't have to wait long for his second of the day as he burst off the base of the scrum and brushed off the would-be defence to score under the posts, Williamson again adding the extra two points.

With plenty of time left in the first half, Bassett continued to press forward, and neat hands put 18-year-old flanker Will Hooper in for his maiden first team try.

There was still time for one more score as scrum-half David Martin made a typical snipe from the base of a lineout and showed great pace to scoot away under the posts for another converted try as Bassett went in 38-0 up at half-time.

Sherbourne claimed their first points early in the second period when their centre went over in the corner, but Bassett replied straight away as Trowbridge grabbed his second.

Nick Parker flew through a gap under the posts for a converted try, and the scoring was completed when Adam Rumble benefited from a rolling maul.
