WOOTTON Bassett's final game of the season against Trowbridge looks ever likely to be a title decider after they pulled to within two points of the Southern Counties South leaders.

Saturday's 39-17 triumph at Yeovil outfit Ivel Barbarians moved Bassett to within striking distance at the top of the table as the season continues to build towards a pulsating climax.

Bassett began the game brightly, stringing together several phases until a poor turnover allowed Ivel to run in a converted try.

The response was immediate however, Gary Williamson converting Bruce Elliotts's try after the flanker took a quick tap penalty.

A textbook catch and drive from a line-out allowed hooker Adam Rumble to crash over before winger JP Travis added a third try as Bassett opened up a 17-7 lead.

Travis completed his brace on the stroke of half time, a neat blind side move enabling him to break away untouched and score in the corner.

The conversion was again missed as the teams turned around with the score 22-7 in Bassett's favour.

Ivel had the wind at their backs in the second half and the fly half took full advantage to safely deposit a penalty kick.

Back came Bassett and Elliott dived over for his second of the day following neat build-up play from centres David Martin and Mike Dixon.

Soon after, Elliott was on hand to complete his hat-trick, peeling off the base of a scrum to breach the Ivel defence once more.

The hosts hit back with their second converted score, but Bassett had the last word as Martin made another nice break and this time raced clear to score the try himself.
